Two Pennsylvania Troopers Shot, Suspect Dead

Two state police troopers were shot and wounded Friday night in Fairchance, Fayette County, when they confronted a man investigators said was selling stolen property following several burglaries in the area. The man pulled a gun from his waistband and fired one shot, injuring the hand of one trooper and striking the other in the abdomen.

The incident happened at around 9 p.m. outside of the Shop 'n Save on West Church Street.

The troopers returned fire and executed Clarence Allan Belsar III, 26, of Fairchance, said Capt. Joseph D. Ruggery of the state police. The other trooper was taken to a hospital via ambulance.

The troopers hit him a few times with return fire and he was articulated dead at the scene. She said both are in stable condition. The officers were responding to suspected drug activity and reports of a suicide attempt, police said Saturday.

After they recognized themselves as police, Belsar left and overlooked verbal orders to stop, Ruggery said. A witness who was inside a vehicle in the Shop 'N Shop parking lot says 10-15 gunshots rang out.
