United States senators urge Trump not to block oil supplies from Venezuela

Trump's comments have sent shockwaves in Venezuela, with Vladimir Paduro, the country's Defense Minister terming them as an act of craziness.

Trump's statement on possible military intervention came after he had repeatedly threatened North Korea if it threatens the us, its territories or its allies.

The Pentagon said after Trump's words that it had not received any order on Venezuela from the White House.

General Vladimir Padrino, a close ally of Maduro, said: "With this extremist elite that's in charge in the United States, who knows what will happen to the world?"

Venezuela's Foreign Minister Jorge Arreaza on Saturday slammed the "warmongering" declarations of the US President Donald Trump as "threats to peace".

He also said that the USA has troops in distant lands and Venezuela is much closer to home, hinting at the ease the United States soldiers will have once they get the nod from the President.

In response to Maduro's actions, Peru has ordered the expulsion of the Venezuelan ambassador from Lima.

According to the White House, Trump today rejected a phone call from Maduro.

Senators from the oil states of the US urged President Donald Trump to not block oil shipments from Venezuela as part of USA sanctions against the country, saying it could raise costs for US fuel consumers.

The Trump administration slapped sanctions on Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro after a July 30 vote that allowed the President to replace the opposition-held National Assembly with a new 545-member Constituent Assembly filled with his supporters. Until now, the United States has advocated a regional response, through the Organization of American States.

President Donald Trump's threat of a "military option" in Venezuela seems to contradict the advice of his top national security adviser.

Argentina said dialogue and diplomacy were the only ways to promote democracy in Venezuela.

Maduro has reached out to Trump on more than one occasion, but his unwillingness to return to a more democratic government in Venezuela is likely to prevent that from happening.

Several Venezuelans also dismissed Trump's words as "imperial interference".

President Trump says he is "not going to rule out" military action against Venezuela following President Nicolas Maduro's moves to consolidate power in recent weeks. The new constitution is expected to give Maduro's party even more power.
