Wimbledon champion Garbine Muguruza knocked out of Rogers Cup — WTA Tour round-up

Rogers Cup: Caroline Wozniacki advances to semis

Halep and Svitolina won rain-delayed quarter-final matches early Saturday, hours before their semifinal.

Wozniacki regained the momentum and after a brief rain delay she served out the match at 5-3.

In other quarterfinal matches, defending champion and second-seeded Simona Halep of Romania faced off with Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia while fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina of Ukraine challenged fourth-seeded Spaniard Garbine Muguruza.

She defeated Czech Lucie Safarova 6-2, 1-6, 7-5.

The No. 6 seed, 27, beat unseeded American Sloane Stephens 6-2, 6-3 in the first semifinal on Saturday at the Aviva Centre at York University.

The sixth seed carried the momentum from her win over Pliskova into the match with Stephens, who was playing in only her third event after missing 11 months with a foot injury. They now face the daunting task of having to play their semi-final later in the day.

After the match, Halep struggled to explain what went wrong.

"I just tried to stay steady, tried to take the ball on the rise and try to stay aggressive when I could and keep my serves aggressive too". "She's strong there and she played her game". I have just to move on and to look forward. So it's really tough to analyze the game. I will try to recover quickly because it was a very tough day not only physically but mentally.
