10000 people evacuated in Moscow over '9/11-style terror threat'

Mass evacuations continue in 29 cities all over Russia

Russian authorities evacuated people from dozens of buildings in Moscow on Wednesday after a flurry of anonymous phone calls asserting the locations had been mined, RIA news agency reported.

On Wednesday, 15,000 people were evacuated from various facilities across Moscow, after bomb threat calls were made to twelve shopping centres, three railway stations and at least four universities.

Olga Shterk, a spokeswoman for the Chelyabinsk regional police, said that Russia's Federal Security Service was investigating the incidents as a "spam attack", according to Radio Free Europe.

Many were city halls, schools and other official buildings, Bloomberg reported, citing local news reports.

The threats began with an anonymous call to the Omsk mayor's office, which prompted the first of what proved to be several evacuations. Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin's Spokesperson declined to comment on the affair, which some say was part of an anti-terrorist drill. Sheremetyevo airport, the capital's busiest, tightened security after a threat, Interfax reported. Initial reports indicated the evacuations might have been some kind of exercise. "Police dogs will be used to track down the bombs", the official said.Police said that most calls had come almost simultaneously and were still coming in."It seems like telephone terrorism and nothing else, but all the calls should be checked up", TASS quoted an official saying.

Russian Federation has been hit by militant attacks, including a bombing on the St Petersburg metro in April in which 16 people died.
