Almost a million Tampa Bay residents still without power after Irma

Irma to Test Florida Utility's $3 Billion of Power-Grid Upgrades

In Miami-Dade County, where roads flooded and debris flew, around three-quarters of residents (830,000 out of 1.1 million) are without power as of Monday morning.

A total of nearly 4.5 million Florida Power & Light customers have been affected by the storm, with about 1 million getting service restored, mostly by automated devices.

Some customers in the hardest hit areas of Florida, however, will likely have to wait weeks before their lights come back on.

FPL said on Wednesday it had provided power to some parts of a nursing home where people died after the facility lost electricity during Irma and that the home was not on a list "critical facilities" prioritized for emergency power restoration.

The mother and son are also dealing with the South Florida heat as FPL works around-the-clock to restore power.

Over 5 million households across the state remained without power as off Tuesday morning at 6 a.m., and while that number remains high, it's a major decrease from Monday's total of 13 million.

"We've never had that many outages, and I don't think any utility in the country ever has", FPL Chief Executive Eric Silagy said at a news conference on Monday.

Some Florida utilities, including FPL, warned customers it could take weeks to restore power in the hardest hit areas because infrastructure systems in some of those places will need to be rebuilt.

A South Florida mother is anxious about her teen son amid a power outage caused by Hurricane Irma. Florida outages for Duke Energy Corp, which serves the northern and central parts of the state, fell to around 1 million by Tuesday afternoon, down from a peak of about 1.2 million on Monday, according to the company's website.

FPL said its two nuclear plants in Florida were safe. The plant's other reactor, Unit 2, continued to operate at full power.
