Apple's iPhone 8 'could be a flop', analyst warns

As is often the case with Apple, this is a Tuesday, and previous iPhone launch schedules show how the following Friday is when pre-orders open.

The upcoming iPhone 8 will have a price range of between $1,000 and $1,200, according to a prolific leaker, further adding to the reports that the device will have a four-figure price tag.

By now, we all know Apple will hold their big reveal event on September 12 to announce the release of the iPhone 7S and 7S Plus, but people will really be tuning in to hear about the iPhone 8.

The drone video gives a peek at Steve Jobs Theater, the auditorium where reporters and analysts will gather on september 12 for Apple's big event. It's even possible the phone will launch at a slightly later date than the other two iPhones - updates to the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus - that Apple is expected to introduce.

Apple CEO Tim Cook always looks for two suppliers for any part that ends up in an Apple product.GettyThe most important part of Apple's upcoming iPhone is its screen, which is widely expected to use a newer kind of display technology called OLED. Kuo also estimates that an OLED unit for an iPhone 8 would cost between $120 and $130, while an LCD unit for the 5.5-inch iPhone 7 Plus would only cost $45 to $55. A "Pro" version of the iPhone seems logical.

Going back to Kuo's note to investors, the analyst also mentioned that he's uncertain whether the iPhone 8 will feature Apple's Touch ID fingerprint sensor.

The iPhone X is expected to come in three storage choices such as 64 GB, 256 GB and 512 GB. Third party developers have also made several apps available on macOS to let you watch the special event, but Apple doesn't recommend this method to users.

We expect the company to position the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus, and perhaps the iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, as budget alternatives to the new crop. This, unsurprisingly, means that Samsung can crank up the prices that it charges for the panels: If Apple wants to ship OLED smartphones, it has no choice but to pay what Samsung wants. Unfortunately, the attempt proved more hard than Apple initially thought, so the idea was eventually abandoned due to the approaching deadlines.
