Brit woman missing in Amazon sent chilling message before 'pirates kidnapped her'

British woman dies in Amazon days after posting fears of being murdered

Ivo Martins, head of the Amazonas state homicide division, told the Associated Press she was killed after being robbed and her body was thrown in the Solimoes River.

A 17-year-old boy has been nabbed in connection with Kelty's murder.

She had spoken of the risks she expected to encounter in her epic trip, telling BBC Surrey how the trip would be about "minimising the risk".

Ms Kelty was 42 days into a 4,000-mile trip from the Amazon's source in Peru, through Brazil and to its mouth on the Atlantic Ocean, using a Global Positioning System tool, social media and blogging to let friends follow her progress.

A 43-year-old British adventurer was murdered while attempting to kayak the length of the Amazon after posting on social media how treacherous the journey was.

One of the men in police custody had claimed Emma was shot twice, however this has not yet been confirmed.

Police said her attackers had tried to sell the items they stole from her - including two mobile phones, a tablet and GoPro camera - at a market in Lauro Sodré.

But she sent out a distress signal the next day, September 13, as she neared Coari on the Solimões river, an area in northwestern Brazil known for pirate attacks and drug traffickers.

On September 10, Kelty took to Twitter saying, "So in or near coari (100km away) i will have my boat stolen and i will be killed too". A statement from Kelty's siblings note they're "extremely proud" of their sister, who sought "to prove that challenges were achievable". My face must have been a picture! "(Town was uber quiet. too quiet!)", read her tweet.

The navy also said her kayak and some personal belongings have been recovered.

Ms Kelty was on a lengthy journey through the Amazon.

He had met Ms Kelty before her trip to help her plan for the journey.

Mr Smart, who is now walking the length of India, said: 'The Emma that I met was an incredibly fearless and courageous person who lived life to the full. In a blog written before she left, she said: "I have had folks, friends and strangers telling me not to do it, it's stupid, it's too risky. and I will die".

An adventurous traveler, Kelty had ventured out on her own before - she hiked 2,600 miles alone across the U.S. and became the sixth woman to ever to ski solo to the South Pole in January, the Guardian reported.
