British-Pakistani actor Riz Ahmed takes home Emmy Award

While this is significant, Ahmed pointed out in a press conference after his win that one trophy does not mean a finite change to the "systemic issue of inclusion".

While the actor appeared delighted with his first Emmy, the win marks another significant feat.

Nasir Khan played by Ahmed on "The Night Of", is a Pakistani college student who wakes and finds a friend stabbed to death.

"I want to say it is always odd reaping the rewards of a story that's based on real world suffering, but if this show has shown a light on some of the prejudice in our societies, Islamophobia, some of the injustice in our justice system, then maybe that is something", Riz said on stage at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles.

Some minority actors, including Ahmed, gathered together for a picture after the awards show concluded.

But, he said, if the miniseries shines a light on such injustice, "then maybe that's something".

"In terms of the USA and the United Kingdom, I'm really proud to be a Londoner. And I think awareness is the first step to real change". "Hopefully we'll see a globalization of our storytelling".

Elsewhere, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won the award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series the sixth time in a row for Veep, smashing not only Candice Bergen's record of the most Emmys for a singular role, but tying her now with Cloris Leachman's record eight Emmys wins by a singular performer.

Sunday was a night of firsts for creators of color at the awards show, with stars like Donald Glover and Lena Waithe also taking home historic honors. The British rapper earns the Emmy for his role in The Night Of, and becomes the first South Asian man and the first Muslim to win an acting Emmy.
