China Plans to Stop Gasoline and Diesel Cars

Xin Guobin, a vice minister at the ministry, said 9 September that China will set a deadline for automakers to end sales of fossil-fuel-powered vehicles, becoming the biggest market do so. The ministry will work out the timetable, Xin said.

The latest news follows a flurry of announcements this summer by global vehicle companies who have revealed plans to phase out production of pure diesel and petrol models, with Volvo, Maserati, and Jaguar Land Rover all pledging to switch to EVs and hybrids.

Volvo Cars, owned by China's Geely Holding Group, announced plans this year to make electric cars in China for global sale starting in 2019.

China produced 28 million cars past year, about one third of the global total, making it the world's biggest auto marker.

GM, Volkswagen, Ford, Daimler and many other automakers also have plans to beef up NEVs production. France and the United Kingdom are looking at similar moves, though they may fall back slightly and include conventional or plug-in hybrids in their mandates.
