China's August trade with North Korea up after United Nations sanctions

Japanese and South Korean officials said it was around 10 times more powerful than the tremor picked up after North Korea's last nuclear test a year ago.

The moves follow the adoption of a unanimous UN Security Council agreement on sanctions after the isolated North conducted its sixth and most powerful nuclear test on September 3.

This test, the most powerful ever conducted by North Korea, had caused an quake of magnitude 6,3 felt up in China.

Kim on Friday threatened the "highest level of hard-line countermeasure in history" in a tirade against Trump´s warning that Washington would "totally destroy" the North if the USA or its allies were threatened. North Korean leader Kim Jong Un is embracing markets and is establishing more channels of interactions with the outside world - even with efforts by the global community to impose sanctions. The U.S. Geological Survey and the European Mediterranean Seismological Center also detected the quakes but could not confirm their cause. Kim also said that he will make the USA "pay dearly" for threatening his country.

The news agency issued a fresh report later, saying the seismic service after further study concluded the quake was natural and not the result of a nuclear test.

The forceful rhetoric from Pyongyang came after Trump threatened to "totally destroy" North Korea in a speech Tuesday to the General Assembly. Robust diplomacy has been stalled for years, and there is little indication that senior officials from Pyongyang and Washington might discuss ways to halt the North's determined march towards inclusion among the world's nuclear weapons powers. North Korea, he added, will also never willingly give up its growing nuclear arsenal.

All of North Korea's previous six nuclear tests registered as earthquakes of magnitude 4.3 or above.

President Trump has said the USA will impose new sanctions on North Korea and praised China for taking measures to financial transactions with the nation. The recently imposed sanctions will be given time to take effect before military action is contemplated.

Trump has dubbed Kim a "madman" and sought to ratchet up sanctions against the isolated regime, which says it needs nuclear weapons to protect itself against the threat of invasion.

Four sources told Reuters of a document sent to Chinese banks, instructing them to comply with United Nations sanctions on North Korea.

Meanwhile, China announced on Saturday that it will limit exports of petroleum products to North Korea starting in October under the terms of the latest United Nations sanctions passed in response to North Korea's sixth nuclear test.

China also previously announced a ban on imports of iron ore, iron, lead, coal, and seafood from North Korea.
