Claire Foy Confirmed as New Lizbeth Salander for Latest 'Girl' thriller

Claire Foy To Be The Lisbeth Salander in ‘The Girl In The Spider’s Web

If the upcoming Spider's Web film is successful enough - both critically and commercially - it stands to reason that Sony Pictures would want to move forward with an adaptation of the fifth installment in the Millennium series: The Girl Who Takes an Eye for an Eye, also written by Lagercrantz.

The Crown star Claire Foy has been confirmed as the new Lizbeth Salander for The Girl In The Spider's Web.

Rooney previously was Oscar-nominated for her work as Lisbeth in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. That proved a box office coup for the studio, pulling in a total of $232.6 million worldwide. Then in 2011, Hollywood assembled an all-star cast and crew to adapt the books to an English-language film that directed by David Fincher and starring Daniel Craig.

Foy won a Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild award for her performance as a young Queen Elizabeth II in Netflix's "The Crown". In a statement, Alvarez described Foy as "an incredible, rare talent who will inject a new and exciting life into Lisbeth".

Indeed David Fincher's 2011 adaptation of Dragon Tattoo was meant to kick off a franchise with Rooney Mara in the Salander role, and he even set screenwriter Steven Zaillian to pen the sequels. It has been a role that has brought her numerous awards already and now she will be taking on the iconic role of Lisbeth Salander. Obviously, Rooney Mara is no longer our dark and twisty heroine, and additionally, visionary director David Fincher is not on board either.

Previous instalments forms he Millennium series began as Swedish-language films before being translated.

The Girl in the Spider's Web hits theaters on October 5, 2018. But, we'll just have to wait and see what happens when Spider's Web hits theaters next October.
