Crystal Palace eye January move for Arsenal outcast

Hodgson at the Palace

Roy Hodgson has admitted that he did not want his 40-year football coaching career to end on the sour note of England's humiliating 2-1 defeat by Iceland at Euro 2016, after taking up the reins at his first club, Crystal Palace, in the Premier League.

The former England manager replaced Frank de Boer, who was sacked on Monday after 77 days with winless Palace bottom of the league. However, to sack someone after just four games is an embarrassment to the club.

"This is very much the club of my boyhood and I remember in my youth watching the club from the terraces at the Holmesdale Road end which gave me such fond memories", he told Palace's website.

A loan spell at Bournemouth, which had started well, ended early last season after he broke his leg playing against Tottenham.

Hodgson recognised he will never fully escape the shadow of England, but Palace is what he cares about now: "I believe the team will stay up, absolutely".

"We've had a bad start".

Palace pin hopes on Hodgson for fortune revival

"The least I can hope for is that we reproduce that against Southampton".

One of the key negotiating points for Hodgson in taking the job was that he could bring his former England and Fulham No2 Ray Lewington into Selhurst with him. Leagues are not won at the end of September and teams are not relegated at the end of September. It is important to note that Palace was very unlucky to lose their last game as they were by far the better team.

"I don't think any manager after two training sessions and a light session today, if the team succeeds this is all my work".

His focus now will be on helping secure Palace's Premier League status, with the game against Southampton followed by the visit of Huddersfield in the Carabao Cup before a string of hard league fixtures.

"There's a lot of players here who have been at the club a long time and had a lot of success, both helping the club up from the Championship and keeping them in the Premier League", he continued.

Trips to Manchester on consecutive weekends to face City and then United are followed by a London derby against Chelsea in south London after the worldwide break in early October.
