Federal Bureau of Investigation launches probe into Uber's Hell program

An Uber spokesman told The Wall Street Journal that the company is cooperating with the investigation. It then cross-referenced those locations with data on its own drivers to find out which ones were working for both companies, according to reports.

Details about the "Hell" program are murky, as Uber has avoided disclosing any officials information about it.

Federal investigators are reportedly probing "whether "Hell" constituted unauthorized access of a computer"-which is a federal crime under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act, the anti-hacking statute Congress passed in 1986". Uber was able to see which Lyft drivers were nearby and what prices they were offering for various trips.

The FBI's NY office and the Manhattan U.S. attorney's office are leading the probe.

A similar lawsuit has already been dismissed.

Uber confirmed that it was co-operating with the investigation but was unable... The incentives might encourage drivers to leave Lyft. The Greyball investigation is being overseen by federal prosecutors in San Francisco, while the foreign payment case is being handled out of Justice Department headquarters in Washington. Now the Federal Bureau of Investigation has the company in its sights because of spying software. Now, the new CEO has another problem to deal with-an FBI investigation.

Then, last month, the Justice Department took initial steps to investigate the managers at the company due to their violations against foreign bribery. Uber staff used this software in tracking individual riders, thereby, risking their privacy.

Chief Executive Dara Khosrowshahi stepped down from the New York Times Company's board of directors Friday, according to an Securities and Exchange Commission filing. Starting this week, he'll take over the helm of Uber.
