Five crew missing after dredger collides with tanker off Singapore

5 men missing after early morning maritime collision

The MPA said in a statement that VTS operators had warned Kartika Segara and JBB de Rong 19 of the impending risk of collision, and both vessels had acknowledged receipt of the call.

Search-and-rescue efforts for the missing crew members of the capsized dredger are ongoing.

Seven crew members were rescued, five more sailors are missing.

The tanker's 26 Indonesian crew members were not injured.

Hopper dredger JBB DE RONG 19, IMO 9828649, GT 4965, built 2017, flag Dominican Republic, manager LK GLOBAL SHIPPING M SDN BHD, Malaysia. Five crew remain unaccounted for. Two MPA tugs have moved the partially submerged dredger to an area near Pulau Senang for follow up underwater search operations.

Out of the seven admitted in the hospital, five have since been discharged, a hospital spokesperson confirmed, adding that one remained admitted while the other was under observation.

It said assets from the Singapore agencies deployed included two Super Puma, two Chinook and one Fokker 50 from the Republic of Singapore Air Force, 15 vessels from MPA, Republic of Singapore Navy, Singapore Police Coast Guard and Singapore Civil Defence Force, and seven vessels from PSA Marine Pte Ltd and POSH Semco Pte Ltd. Singaporean Minister for Defense Ng Eng Hen expressed hope that the missing seafarers would be located soon.

The dredger was transiting in the westbound lane of the traffic separation scheme (TSS) when it was involved in a collision with the Indonesian-registered tanker Kartika Segara which was joining the eastbound lane of the TSS.

The accident around the busy Singapore Strait occurred just weeks after a deadly collision involving a United States warship in the same area.

On August 21, the destroyer USS John S. McCain collided with a tanker near the Singapore Strait, tearing a gaping hole in the ship's hull, and flooding it with water. The cause of that collision is still under investigation.
