Gareth Bale on joining Man United & returning to Tottenham

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale has suggested to The Mail that he may struggle to contain his emotions if he scores a late victor for Real Madrid against Tottenham Hotspur in the Champions League.

"I had to take a lot of painkillers to be able to play".

The Wales worldwide has been linked with a move to Old Trafford for some time, with the latest transfer window rekindling talk of a possible £100 million switch.

"Well there's an argument for that, but I think the main thing, when you look back on your career, is that you look at your trophies", Bale told the Daily Mail. And yes, now I think I should have taken more time to recover so I could have played much better when I returned and be able to do all those things with the ankle which I wasn't able to.

Bale was signed as the long-term replacement for Ronaldo - who looked a goner before his incredible Champions League hat-tricks against Bayern Munich and Atletico Madrid last season made him priceless once again.

"I just want to go out on to the football pitch and enjoy my football".

You've got Paul Pogba and Romelu Lukaku, if he fulfils his potential, Marcus Rashford, David de Gea, a world-class player, and then if you add somebody like Gareth Bale to the mix, that's when you talk about United having Champions League expectations. "That's the main thing".

The Champions League draw has given Bale and Modric a reunion with their former club, with Spurs travelling to the Bernabeu on October 17 before Real arrive at Wembley on November 1. "I've had some great moments, and others not so much".

That Spurs team under the guidance of Harry Redknapp failed to land a major trophy beyond the 2008 League Cup and Bale admits it was a shame given the talent the club later had.

He said: "I've spoken to Luka about this. When you look at the team we had at the time, we feel that we should have won something". But when you've been injured for three months and you see your teammates playing, you really want to return and that's what I did.
