Harvard Kennedy School withdraws Chelsea Manning's fellowship invitation

Ex-CIA Boss Resigns From Harvard Over Chelsea Manning Hire

Harvard University rescinded Chelsea Manning's visiting fellow title after that sparked outrage in the intelligence community. Her own fight to transition her gender in a military men's prison helped her discover her voice as an advocate for LGBTQ equality, and she even began writing a column for The Guardian before President Obama commuted her sentence.

Manning, the transgender soldier formerly known as Bradley Manning, was one of 10 visiting fellows welcomed to the school's Institute of Politics on Wednesday.

Mr. Elmendorf added that Ms. Manning will still be allowed to speak with students and visit the school, but will not have the title of visiting fellow. "Indeed, Ms. Manning stands against everything the courageous men and women I serve alongside stand for".

Harvard University has reversed its announcement of a Visiting Fellowship for Chelsea Manning, who had been invited to discuss LGBT issues. "They chill marginalised voices under Central Intelligence Agency pressure".

The announcement came after U.S. CIA Director Mike Pompeo cancelled a speaking engagement at the university on Thursday over the invitation to Ms. Manning, whom he called an "American traitor" in a letter explaining his decision.

Pompeo and Morell did not indicate that their decisions were motivated by Manning's choice to become a woman, but on her choices leading to conviction.

Elmendorf, Dean of the Harvard Kennedy School, announces that CIA Director Mike Pompeo will not be appearing. Let me be clear, this has nothing to do with Ms Manning's identity as a transgender person.

When the Kennedy school announced Manning's invitation earlier this week, it said Hillary Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook and former White House press secretary Sean Spicer would also be visiting fellows.

Manning, 29, was pardoned by former President Barack Obama in 2016 after she served seven years of her 35-year prison sentence.

However, the dean said the school was still "maintaining the invitation for her to spend a day at the Kennedy School and speak in the Forum".

Supporters say a video of a Baghdad airstrike she made public exposed war crimes the United States committed during the Iraq war, but opponents point to a subsequent dump of 251,287 State Department cables as evidence she was indiscriminately leaking information and jeopardized the lives and work of USA intelligence analysts.

The U.S media tends to glamorize Manning's leak of 700,000 documents to Wikileaks as an effort to give greater government transparency, but among those documents were Iraq and Afghanistan battlefield reports and diplomatic cables.

Following the CIA-led backlash, Harvard buckled under pressure and made a decision to prevent Ms Manning from speaking.

Pentagonresearch concluded Manning's actions did not lead to any individuals being killed by enemy forces after being named in the release, and anewly published Pentagon analysis suggests the disclosures didn't have "strategic impact" on the wars in the Middle East.
