Star Wars Episode IX's director announced!

Episode VIII is written and directed by Rian Johnson, and is the second film in the new sequel trilogy in following "The Force Awakens".

Director Rian Johnson is now putting the finishing touches on "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (episode VIII), which is due to release December 15, 2017.

Last week, director Colin Trevorrow and Lucasfilm parted company on the upcoming Star Wars: Episode IX. Still, if The Last Jedi turns out to be well-received by critics and fans, expect a number of them to wonder why Johnson couldn't just finish off this trilogy too.

In a statement, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said she was "excited" to welcome Abrams back to the iconic sci-fi franchise, after he previously helmed Star Wars: The Force Awakens. J.J. Abrams has been confirmed to handle both writing and directing Star Wars: Episode IX. There is little doubt he will be given great creative control over what exactly Episode IX will finally look like.

Clearly, he doesn't entirely rule himself out of taking the next film on, but conversely, he's got three months of promoting Star Wars: The Last Jedi ahead of him.

In its statement when Trevorrow lost the gig, Lucasfilm said it wanted to "share more information about the film soon". Over the summer, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller left the untitled Han Solo movie as it was nearing the end of principal photography, with just two more weeks left of shooting left to go.

Director JJ Abrams is all set to replace Colin Trevorrow as the helmer of the ninth chapter of the Star Wars film franchise.
