Kate Walsh Opens Up About Having a Brain Tumor

Top Entertainment

In an interview with Cosmopolitan, Walsh says doctors diagnosed her with a brain tumor.

The auburn beauty dismissed her exhaustion as being due to working an 80-hour week on NBC's legal drama Bad Judge.

Walsh went in for an MRI - shattering her pinky the night before because she had no depth perception - and had the benign tumor removed three days later. "I figured, okay, I'll change up my workout routine, I'll go back to mellow stuff like hiking".

Even though the tumor was benign, Walsh said that the whole experience was a big wake-up call for her. I was relieved that I could get in with a great doctor and one of the most incredible surgeons in the world, and have them take care of it.

It was when she began suffering cognitive difficulties that Kate really began to worry, as she explained, "It felt like (the brain condition) aphasia, but it wasn't just not being able to find words; I would lose my train of thought, I wasn't able to finish sentences, and that was when I got really alarmed".

Hamas Agrees to Fatah Talks on Palestinian Unity
Hamas ousted the Fatah-dominated Palestinian Authority from Gaza in 2007 and Fatah continued to oversee the West Bank. Gaza's economy is in tatters and residents of the territory have electricity for only a few hours a day.

Now she's a paid spokesperson for Cigna, and she and several other former TV doctors have teamed up to urge others to get checked out.

"Those cliché, existential things do happen when you have a brain tumor, like, 'How do I really want to spend my time?' I want to be with my friends and family and work on projects that are hugely important to me, and fun, and that make a cultural contribution", she told Cosmopolitan. "It was never anything I would have imagined". "I shattered my pinkie the night before my MRI, because I had no depth perception".

"I thought maybe it was menopausal symptoms, because there are a lot of the same markers, but I really pushed to see a neurologist, I just had an instinct".

The actress "took about nine months off" following the surgery, but when she returned she "hit [the entertainment industry] hard".

"You'd think that after playing Dr. Addison for the better part of a decade, where I spent more time on a hospital set than at my house, that I would feel somehow more comfortable, but I was such a little scaredy-cat", Walsh said.
