Kenya stripped of hosting rights for CHAN 2018

The stadium is one of the facilities earmarked to host 2018 Africa Nations Championship

After weeks of deliberation and speculation, Kenya has been stripped of the right to host the 2018 African Nations Championship (CHAN) following last weekend's Confederation of African Football (CAF) executive committee meeting in Accra led by CAF leader Ahmad Ahmad.

Caf announced that the decision to move the tournament was made "in light of accumulated delays from reports of the various inspection missions conducted in the country". It's the No. 2 tournament for national teams in Africa behind the African Cup of Nations.

Kenya's Supreme Court on September 1 nullified the re-election of President Uhuru Kenyatta and ordered for a new vote which has generated tensions between the supporters of the ruling party and the opposition.

Kenya is set to have a repeat presidential poll on October 26, just three months before the tournament kicks-off in January and Mwendwa pointed out that the political uncertainty was a major contributing factor as to why Caf snatched away the rights from Kenya's hands.

"With an overwhelming majority of the members present, it was chose to withdraw the host of the competition from Kenya in the light of the accumulated delays and various reports of the inspection missions conducted in the country, the last of which took place from 11 to 17 September 2017, "said the pan-African body in a statement issued on Saturday evening".

Finally, the main issue of CAN 2019 was discussed.

They also added that the political unrest in the country will not aid a successful tournament. Equatorial Guinea took over the 2015 African Cup after Morocco withdrew over fears of the spread of the deadly Ebola virus.

The continental football governing body has therefore called for fresh bids from interested countries within the next week after which a decision will be taen on the new hosts for the tournament.
