Leftists cheer Hurricane Irma's hit on Trump-voting Florida

President Donald Trump once said he got $17 million in a hurricane damage insurance payout for his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida, but an Associated Press investigation couldn't find much evidence of the supposed damage. "He really wants to make sure that we're taking care of the people".

"I think now, with what's happened with the hurricane, I'm going to ask for a speedup".

"Right now, we are anxious about lives, not cost", Trump said after returning from Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland where he monitored the storm and met with his Cabinet.

The National Hurricane Centre (NHC) predicted that Irma's eye wall is due to strike part of the Florida's 120-mile Keys, home to 73,000 people, early on Sunday.

"This s a storm of absolutely historic destructive potential", Trump began, seeming to stumble over pronunciation of "Irma".

Trump said he planned to discuss other topics with his Cabinet as well, including what he called "the latest provocative and destabilising actions of North Korea" and the need for an overhaul of the nation's tax code.

While there, Pence told reporters Trump has been monitoring the storm around the clock and has directed the full resources of the government to help in the response.

As many as 5.6 million people have been evacuated after Irma's landfall in Cuba.

Trump sided with Democrats this week to raise the USA borrowing limit and keep the government operating through early December in a bid to speed federal assistance to hurricane victims.

"The program was already in trouble" before Hurricanes Harvey and Irma began approaching the US, said Karen O'Neill, an associate professor at Rutgers University who studies how policies about land and water affect government power.

States of emergency have been declared for Florida, South Carolina, the U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico.

"Let's hope there's no hurricane amnesia", said White House Homeland Security Adviser Tom Bossert, as he urged Florida residents to follow evacuation orders from local officials.

Early on Friday, Irma battered the Turks and Caicos Islands - a British overseas territory - causing communications to go down.

In the first eight months of the Trump administration, the Republican-controlled Congress has already failed to replace Obamacare as long promised.
