Liverpool legend explains why attacker was right to leave Arsenal

The England worldwide moved to Anfield for £40m (€43.7m) on deadline day after turning down the offer of a new contract.

Ahead of the summer, Jurgen Klopp had identified four players he wanted to improve key areas of his team: Virgil van Dijk at centre-back, Fulham's Ryan Sessegnon at left-back, Naby Keita in central midfield, and Mohamed Salah as a wide forward.

Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain decided on a switch from Arsenal to Liverpool after discussing the move with England manager Gareth Southgate, according to a report.

Liverpool visits Manchester City on Saturday in the standout match of the fourth round of league games, and it remains to be seen if Coutinho is in the right state of mind to be in contention. What you see is a fantastic manager and I think he will help Alex a lot.

"And obviously the way his teams play - he gets the boys playing".

And the Reds boss certainly looked happy to be welcoming Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool for the first time after the worldwide break on Wednesday.

"Even when he was at Borussia Dortmund, you see these things from the outside when you look at managers and the way they work", Oxlade-Chamberlain said.

Oxlade-Chamberlain refused to sign a new contract with Arsenal and also rejected an opportunity to join Chelsea in favour of completing a move to the north of England with Liverpool.

The Gunners offloaded Gabriel to Valencia (£10m), Kieran Gibbs to WBA, £7m and Oxlade-Chamberlain to Liverpool (40m) for money this summer and speaking at his Thursday press conference Wenger claimed he had to sell players in the summer to balance the books after the arrivals of Sead Kolasinac and Alexandre Lacazette.

"First of all, what he's achieved, you respect that straight away and how much he knows about the game, and then all his extra attributes: his relationships with the players and how he pushes you, encourages you and what he demands from you, that's like a bonus".

"Overall, I feel that we are in a strong financial situation today and have a good enough squad to compete".

"That's what makes him special in my eyes".
