LSU student had 'highly elevated blood alcohol level'

Maxwell Gruver died at a Baton Rouge hospital Thursday night

Clark also reported there was no internal or external trauma noted.

Complete results are still pending, but Dr. Beau Clark says preliminary findings show "highly elevated blood alcohol", and THC, the active ingredient of marijuana, in Maxwell Gruver's system. An autopsy is planned for Friday, September 15.

Louisiana State University officials said they are investigating a student death that may have been caused by a hazing incident, the school announced Thursday.

Additional details were not released by campus police.

Alexander said all Greek life has been suspended indefinitely on the campus pending the results of the investigation. Stay with WDSU.com for updates.

"We are investigating this matter with the utmost seriousness...as we have continually warned hazing is unsafe, irresponsible and unacceptable", Alexander contended.

According to LSU, Gruver was taken from the Phi Delta Theta fraternity house to the Our Lady of the Lake hospital where he later died on Thursday. According to LSU, Gruver's death is being investigated as a possible hazing incident.

"We're committed to investigating this situation thoroughly".

Phi Delta Theta returned as an official university fraternity in 2006 after a two-year hiatus, according to reports from the Daily Reveille.

"The death of Maxwell Gruver was tragic and untimely", said LSU President F. King Alexander, who offered his "deepest sympathies and prayers" to the student's family and friends.

Gruver was a graduate of Blessed Trinity Catholic High School. It is unknown whether the house mom was in the fraternity house the night before or on the morning of Gruver's death, he added.

Barron wrote that he worries, "knowing that alcohol misuse and other unsafe behaviors exist, particularly within fraternity and sorority communities, where all universities see a disproportionate problem with hazing, excessive drinking and related behaviors, such as sexual assault".
