Manson Follower Leslie Van Houten Granted Parole

Leslie Van Houten was Manson's youngest killer

While she's been a model prisoner for over 40 years and told the board she's deeply ashamed of the murders, Governor Brown said her crime left a lasting mark on society that its equally disturbing the murders were meant to start a race war. Brown rejected release past year.

Van Houten was both the youngest and also seemingly the most unlikely member of Manson's so-called family.

Fellow family members Tex Watson and Patricia Krenwinkel have each been denied parole multiple times, while Susan Atkins died in prison in 2009.

Van Houten and others were convicted of the 1969 murder of Leno and Rosemary La Bianca in Los Angeles.

Nearly 50 years after committing the murders which resulted in a life sentence, Leslie Van Houten, is up for parole.

"There was nothing heartfelt in her testimony today", said Deborah Tate, the sister of Sharon Tate who was one of the Manson clan victims from the summer of 1969.

After Van Houten and others stabbed the LaBiancas in their home, they used their blood to write "Rise", "Death to Pigs" and "Healter-Skelter", a misspelled reference to a Beatles song, on the walls and a fridge door. But she helped kill grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, on the second night. Starting in 1979, Van Houten has gone before the parole board regularly. Its cult leader Charles Manson was convicted and found guilty of seven murders in 1971, including that of actress Sharon Tate, who was eight months pregnant at the time.

"I don't let myself off the hook". "They were all better people than this one, and they don't get a parole or release or get to be with their friends and family again".

Share ended her testimony by saying that she regretted encouraging Houten to join the cult.

The Charles Manson follower was initially sentenced to death, but after the death penalty was revoked in the state of California, her sentence was reduced to life imprisonment with eligibility for parole.
