Newly leaked document reveals United Kingdom plans to block low-skilled European Union workers

Newly leaked document reveals United Kingdom plans to block low-skilled European Union workers

"Freedom of movement of labour is particularly important to Scotland".

"On the other hand we want British companies to do more to train up British workers, to do more to improve skills of those who leave our colleges". "But what people want to see is control of that immigration".

Politicians from across the political divide made clear their opposition to the plans.

The 82-page document, marked as extremely sensitive and dated August 2017, amounts to a "British jobs for British workers" strategy and will delight hard-line Brexiteers but anger pro-Remain MPs.

"Put plainly ... to be considered valuable to the country as a whole, immigration should benefit not just the migrants themselves but also make existing residents better off".

These include agreement on the rights of European Union national posted workers, some aspects relating to permanent residence including the need to apply for a new residence document, and the rights of future family members.

They would also face new restrictions on family members being brought to Britain.

The highly sensitive draft document from the Home Office, leaked to The Guardian and dated August 2017, provides an insight into the government's approach with regard to its negotiations with its European Union partners, as it aims to deliver on "taking back control".

A spokesman for the Home Office told AFP the government would not comment on the leaked draft.

Asked by Blackford if she was "dancing to the tune of her rightwing backbenchers" on immigration, May reiterated her point."There is a reason for wanting to ensure that we can control migration", she said. "But this was suppressed by the Home Office under Theresa May because the results were inconvenient".

In fact, since the draft was written, only last month, there have been six new versions of the proposals, none of which has yet been to cabinet, with the final version due in a White Paper later this autumn.

But pro-Remain MP Alison McGovern said the document reflected a " mean and cynical approach" by the Government "which is already deterring people from coming here".

Leaked documents revealing draft proposals for Britain's future immigration policy have met with a mixed response, with many businesses warning that tighter restriction could see employers struggle to meet staffing demands.

Mayor of London Sadiq Khan criticised the document, calling it "an example of an extreme hard Brexit and a blueprint for strangling the London economy".

The TUC said the plans would mean that migrants would be exploited and "create an underground economy".

Ian Wright, director general of the Food and Drink Federation, said: "Food and drink manufacturing, Britain's largest manufacturing sector, will be alarmed by the proposals". While EU nationals will be able to live and work in the United Kingdom, provided they fall into one of the four categories (worker, self-employed, student, self-sufficient), a residence permit would generally be for two years.

If implemented, the policies risk acting as a drag on economic growth by denying entry to immigrants who contribute more to Britain's economy than they take out.

Drastic changes to the definition of a "family member" to include only direct family and "durable partners".

"This month the government's repeal bill will initiate a programme of legislation that will make Britain ready for life outside the EU".
