Northern Ireland boss Michael O'Neill charged with drink driving

Ex-Hibs and Dundee Utd ace Michael O'Neill charged with drink driving after being pulled over in Edinburgh

It is understood Mr O'Neill failed a breath test after he was pulled over by Edinburgh police around 1am on Sunday.

A spokesman for the Irish Football Association told the Belfast Telegraph: "The Irish Football Association is aware of an alleged drink-driving incident involving Michael O'Neill".

The IFA added that it was a "police matter" and would make no further comment.

The 48-year-old former Hibs' midfielder was detained by police on the A720 on Sunday morning just before 1.00am.

It follows their huge success at the 2016 Euros in France where O'Neill got Northern Ireland to their highest-ever Federation Internationale de Football Association world ranking and their first major tournament in 30 years.

Under his leadership, Northern Ireland made it through to the last 16.

They finished third in their group for Euro 2016 behind Germany and Poland after winning their qualification group.

Northern Ireland secured back-to-back wins against San Marino and the Czech Republic during last week's global break and are guaranteed to finish second behind Germany in their group, as they are eight points clear of third-placed Azerbaijan with two games to go.

O'Neill is on course to guiding Northern Ireland to their first World Cup appearance since 1986.

In 2008, he was appointed manager of Dublin team, Shamrock Rovers, and guided them to successive League of Ireland titles in 2010 and 2011.

Michael O'Neill has a house in Edinburgh and if he is convicted would likely face a driving ban and fine.
