NTSB: Troy Gentry helicopter crash caused by engine problems

The pilot, James Evan Robinson, was in communication with two flight instructors on the ground that he "was unable to control engine rpm with throttle inputs", the report said.

Gentry, who was a member of the Grand Ole Opry, was one half of the popular duo Montgomery Gentry. The publication says that the pilot chose to stop the engine and perform an autorotation as a result.

Eventually, he opted to turn off the engine and perform an autorotation, something he'd successfully done multiple times in the past.

The trouble began several minutes after the flight began Friday afternoon at Flying W Airport in Burlington County.

In autorotation, the helicopter's blades are turned by the air moving up through the rotor during descent. Gentry was alive when he was extricated from the crash but died at a hospital.

His death was confirmed in a tweet from the band at 3:58 p.m.

Robinson, 30, who recently moved to Medford from Georgia to work at the helicopter flight school, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Prior to the stream, The Opry has released a video of Montgomery Gentry's final Opry performance.

Gentry was born April 5, 1967 in Lexington, Kentucky and went on to attend both Lexington Community College and the University of Kentucky. He last lived in Franklin, Tennessee.

"Toward the end of the video, the descent profile became more vertical and the rate of the descent increased before the helicopter descended out of view", the report said.
