Options for North Korea are 'effective and overwhelming'

The U.N. Security Council met on Friday afternoon to discuss the North Korean launch, as requested by the United States and Japan. It's not just about talking.

Trump's National Security Adviser H.R. McMaster told at a White House briefing that the President will host a lunch with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and South Korea's Moon Jae-in on Thursday on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. He said the USA retained a military option in dealing with North Korea.

The increasing levels of sanctions will cut off 90 percent of North Korea's trade.

On the other hand, the US and South Korea have announced diminishing willingness to talk to North Korea as it continues its provocative missile launches and nuclear tests.

Trump heads to the U.N. General Assembly meeting next week with the same suitcase of bad options as his predecessors.

H R MCMASTER: The United Nations, of course, holds tremendous potential to realize its founding ideals, but only if it's run more efficiently and effectively.

Those arguments were buttressed from within Trump's administration last month when Steven Bannon concurred that America was essentially bluffing about military options, shortly before he was pushed out as the president's strategic adviser. North Korea is closer than ever to its goal of building a military arsenal that can viably target both US troops in Asia and the American homeland.

At the White House, McMaster called on nations to aggressively enforce recent U.N. sanctions to increase economic pressure.

"I think foreign leaders expect Trump to have some harsh words for the United Nations", said Richard Gowan, a United Nations expert with the European Council on Foreign Relations.

Some diplomats may be braced for an anti-UN tirade by the president, but the message from the White House indicates that Trump may adopt a more measured approach, and emphasise the need for global cooperation across a range of topics.

Diplomacy on the North Korean nuclear standoff has been stalled for years.

"We try and push through as many diplomatic options as we have", Haley said.

"I think it's a signal that the USA takes the General Assembly much less seriously than it did under President Obama", said Gowan.

Once again Kim Jong-un, with his latest threatening launch of a long-range missile over Japan yesterday, has demonstrated both North Korea's rapidly accelerating technical capabilities, and Pyongyang's aptitude for strategic and psychological intimidation. "Iran will be an issue". Terrorism efforts and how we counter that is a huge topic. The president is expected to address some of those issues on Tuesday when he takes the lectern at the U.N.to address world leaders. Haley says she's read a draft of the speech.

"I personally think he slaps the right people, he hugs the right people, and he comes out with [the] USA being very strong in the end", she said.
