Pakistan summons Myanmar's envoy, over Rohingyas' plight

Rohingya Muslims

Rohingya Muslims are once more fleeing in droves into Bangladesh, trying to escape the latest surge in violence in Rakhine state between a shadowy militant group and Myanmar's military.

Meanwhile, Yanghee Lee, the United Nations special rapporteur on human rights in Myanmar, has said: "Perhaps about a thousand or more are already dead" in the recent spate of violence in the Rakhine state and that while the figure may be indicative of casualties of both - the minorities and the Myanmar Army - but the deaths "would be heavily concentrated on the Rohingya population".

The fires were blazing in the ethnically mixed Rathedaung township, where populations of Rohingya Muslims and Rakhine Buddhists live side by side.

In Myanmar, authorities have blamed ARSA insurgents for the acts of violence, including setting fire to villages in Rakhine.

The German government says it has halted several aid projects in Myanmar due to violence in the country that has caused hundreds of thousands of ethnic Rohingya Muslims to flee their homes.

The military and security forces of Buddhist-majority Myanmar, as well as militia groups, have been widely accused of targeting Rohingya civilians in the new wave of violence.

After being briefed by Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque on the Rohingya issue on Saturday, Russian Ambassador Alexander Ignatov said he believed that the situation would come up in the upcoming UN General Assembly in NY.

It was unclear who set fire to the villages.

The Pakistan Foreign Office on Saturday summoned Myanmar's ambassador and recorded its protest over the plight of Rohingya Muslims. It said at least three people including two children had been injured in the past week. Many collapsed on the beach from motion sickness and dehydration.

Myanmar's government has rejected a proposed ceasefire by militants in the country's embattled Rakhine state, saying they don't "negotiate with terrorists".

One source said a camp for internally displaced people in the area also went up in flames.

The Turkish first lady said Myanmar government could resolve the crisis in a short time if it wished so. But none had been planted recently.

With the Kutupalang refugee camp at Cox's Bazar, Bangladesh, filling up, these people have to camp in the woods while waiting for spaces. The report said $77 million in funding was needed to deliver urgent aid to the new arrivals. "It is also driving up the risks that the country's five-year-old transition from military rule will stumble, that Rohingya communities will be radicalised, and that regional stability will be weakened", it said.
