Pharrell Williams Takes Knee At Concert: 'That's What This Flag Is For'

Many people waited in line early Saturday morning to get tickets

The concert headlined by The Dave Matthews Band was organized in order to heal the town which was hit by an unfortunate incident where white supremacists violently clashed with counter-protesters in August.

"If I want to get on my knees right now for the people of my city, for the people of my state, that's what this flag is for", Williams told the crowd, according to Billboard. (You can watch the moment at 11:34 in the video below.) "If I wanted to get on my knees right now for the people of my city, for the people of my state".

Other performers included Ariana Grande, Chris Stapleton, Brittany Howard, Cage the Elephant and surprise guests Chris Martin and Jonny Buckland of Coldplay. "He's fired, '" Trump said. Wonder, who had done the same on Saturday at the Global Citizen Fest in New York's Central Park, and Matthews, who helped organize the event, did it together at the beginning of Wonder's set. This comes after a weekend where several football players, baseball players and tennis players have been taking a knee to mark and protest silently for the injustice done towards people of color.

And John Legend wrote an op-ed for Slate on the true meaning of patriotism and protests: "Protest is patriotic".

"Tonight, I" m taking a knee for America", Wonder said. Because these conversations are necessary for progress. "They are the definition of patriotism".

Along with him, there were other singers who performed. "In the face of a great divider, we must be united", Vedder said towards the end of his set.

"We must take care of each other, and this planet", he added.
