Premier League clubs approve change to shorten summer transfer window

Cesc Fabregas

However, clubs from other competitions where the window remains open will still be able to purchase players from the Premier League. The vote was not unanimous and clubs will still be able to sell players until the end of the normal window.

The announcement came after a proposal to change the transfer window was considered in a shareholders' meeting on September 7. They have always maintained that an earlier close to the window would be an improvement on the current situation. The likes of Alexis Sanchez and Virgil van Dijk will have a clearer idea of their futures, rather than training individually and missing three games of the season amid transfer speculation.

Changing this aspect of the summer window has been a hot-topic for some time, with many managers unhappy with transfer business continuing three weeks into the new Premier League season, often causing rifts between players and clubs.

"Even in the games, you sit there before the games and even in players' minds they have no clarity", he told reporters at his weekly press conference.

Clubs have discussed this topic at length at previous Shareholders' Meetings (February 2017 and June 2017) prior to today's vote.

"I would prefer the window to close as soon as possible", he said on August 18.

The other thing is, I believe that after a season or two, the rest of UEFA's clubs will probably implement something similar.

Peterborough United owner Darragh MacAnthony doesn't want the Football League to emulate Premier League's decision to shorten the transfer window next summer.

Not only that, it has been confirmed that players can still be sold after the window closes, which means that foreign clubs can still sign PL players after the deadline. "Certainly from a possession, attacking and flair point of view, they have got it all".

"Shutting the transfer window before the season starts has always found favour with our clubs".

What happens to the market from here, I dread to think about.
