The British government will soften its seven-year grip on public-sector pay with police and prison officers set to get increases above a 1 percent cap, media reported.

And today's announcements on pay for police and prison officers mark the beginning of the end for the public sector pay cap.

The announcement comes as the leader of Unite said he was prepared to break the law in order to launch strike action against the public sector pay cap.

There has been speculation in the media that the government will agree to award police and prison officers increases above 1 percent this week based on recommendations from independent review bodies.

Ministers have also been warned that they need to fund the pay rise in full since police forces have budgeted for a 1% rise and without extra money, jobs are at risk.

Officers who work in correctional facitilies will receive an average 1.7% pay rise, while and police officers will receive additional pay totalling 2% for 2017/18.

The 2017/18 settlements will be met out of existing departmental budgets and will be implemented immediately.

"The key word is flexibility", the spokesman said.

The government's move will not, it is clear, call a halt to falling real wages for public servants.

"However, the Government recognises that in some parts of the public sector, particularly in areas of skill shortage, more flexibility may be required to deliver world-class public services, including in return for improvements to public sector productivity".

"We are making sure that our policy is targeted to where there are specific issues, where we need to make sure we recruit more talent into the public sector, but also where we do need to make sure that we are holding on to those really valued people", Ms Truss told BBC Radio 4's World at One.

Unions across the United Kingdom are pressing for a 5% increase for millions of nurses, teachers, council staff, civil servants and other workers who have been subjected to a pay freeze or 1% cap for seven years.

Speaking at the TUC conference in Brighton, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn accused ministers of playing "divide and rule" with different parts of the public sector.

The composite motion, among other measures, called for "immediate steps to develop a coordinated strategy of opposition to the pay cap. including. pay demands, campaign activities, tactics, ballots and industrial action".

However Prime Minister Theresa May has come under increasing pressure from opponents and some senior figures in her own party to ditch the cap in the wake of June's snap election when she lost her parliamentary majority.

"The POA is right".

"Anything below that inflation rate is a pay cut for our members".

But the PM's official spokesman confirmed the Sun's revelations from a fortnight ago, that there will soon be higher pay deals for nurses, teachers and other workers in 2018-2019.
