Rohingya rebels declare one-month ceasefire

Rohingya Muslim kids fled from ongoing military operations in Myanmar’s Rakhine state pose for

That has left tens of thousands of new arrivals with nowhere to shelter from the monsoon rains.

He cited reports that Myanmar authorities had begun to lay landmines along the border with Bangladesh and would require returnees to provide "proof of citizenship".

Myanmar says it is targeting armed insurgents, including fighters from the Arakan Rohingya Salvation Army (Arsa), the group which claimed responsibility for the August attacks and reportedly controls small ares of Rakhine.

The one-month ceasefire will last until October 9, ARSA said.

Besides, four more Rohingyas, including a woman and a child, who have crossed the border with bullet wounds, entered Bangladesh Friday night.

The principle of non-refoulement or not sending back refugees to a place where they face danger is considered part of customary worldwide law and is binding on all states whether they have signed the Refugee Convention or not.

India has called for an immediate end to the violence, urging the situation "be handled with restraint and maturity", according to a foreign ministry statement Saturday.

Beginning on August 25 and rapidly escalating ever since, Burma's security forces have conducted disproportionate and indiscriminate attacks against Rohingya Muslims, conflating the unlawful and deadly acts of a few with the overwhelmingly peaceful population now fleeing for its life.

Almost 313,000 Rohingya have fled to neighboring Bangladesh as fighting intensified between government forces and Rohingya militants, according to the United Nations refugee agency, or UNHCR.

"How can you handle such a big influx of people? Human Rights Watch emphasised the Myanmar Government to "stop this offensive" and allow 'humanitarian assistance" and neutral journalists to know the facts.

Rohingya Muslims are considered to be among the world's most persecuted people.

"We went to all the camps but there was no place to stay".

Amina Sadek came from Montreal, and said that even though she wasn't of Rohingya ancestry, it was important to speak out for her fellow Muslims.

Amnesty said that based on interviews with eyewitnesses and analysis by its own weapons experts, it believes there is "targeted use of landlines" along a narrow stretch of the northwestern border of Rakhine state that is a crossing point for fleeing Rohingya.

In the midst of this, the United States is walking a diplomatic tightrope, trying to balance criticism of Myanmar's repression against its minority Rohingya population without jeopardizing its relationship with Naypyidaw as it seeks to shepherd the country through a pained democratic transition.

Al Hussein also expressed dismay at what he called the "broader rise of intolerance towards religious and other minorities in India", and alleged that those who spoke out for fundamental human rights faced threats.

"They (Myanmar army) are saying "go away or we'll burn all of you".

Ahmed, who recently moved to Ottawa, told CBC News he had uncles, aunts and cousins living under constant threat of violence and being deprived of basic human rights. "I think such circumstances Buddha would definitely help those poor Muslims".

"How can we live like this here?" he added, gesturing to the swampy earth.

The eye witnesses say, Myanmar "security forces and vigilantes attacked and burned villages, shooting civilians and causing others to flee".

The disaster management and relief minister, Mofazzal Hossain Chowdhury Maya, has said the government is allocating some 2,500 acres of land for the Rohingya people fleeing atrocities of the Myanmar army.
