Sean Spicer makes Emmys cameo in politically-loaded opening

He then made a quip about the crowd size at the award show, which may have looked like an innocent joke at Trump's expense.

The Emmy audience was shocked at Spicer's appearance, especially Melissa McCarthy, who impersonated Spicer on "Saturday Night Live" multiple times last season.

"If we're honest with ourselves - and as artists, I think we have to be honest with ourselves - we know that the biggest TV star of the past year is Donald Trump", Colbert said.

Stephen Colbert shaded President Donald Trump-again and again. "Both in person and around the world", said Spicer.

He appeared on a "portable podium" - referencing Melissa McCarthy's popular Saturday Night Live impression of Spicer's short tenure in the White House.

Spicer told the The Times that nearly no one involved in the production of the Emmys knew about his appearance on the show.

But not everyone was upset.

"The Handmaid's Tale" and political comedy "Veep" won the top prizes at the Emmy awards on Sunday, where "Saturday Night Live" was also a big victor on a night dominated by jokes about U.S. President Donald Trump.

Donald Grover won the award in the Best Directing for Comedy Series, while Laura Dern bagged an Emmy in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a limited series for her performance in Big Little Lies. Colbert joked with previous Emmys host Seth Myers about the tweet Trump sent that accused Myers of having "marbles in his mouth".

Many who are fans of the president thought Spicer was stupid for even making an attempt to curry favor with the liberal crowd. "I don't think you can help but have it affect you".

He admitted that the biggest star of the year, in fact, was Trump, reminding the audience and viewers at home of the former reality star's obsession with the Emmys. He never won. Why didn't you give him an Emmy?

"You guys love morally compromised heroes", he continued, saying that "he never forgave you and he never will".

Julia Louis-Dreyfus won her sixth consecutive Emmy for playing a female egotistical presidential candidate on HBO's "Veep", one of the few repeat winners.

The bit came moments after Colbert riffed on the notion that President Trump is now the biggest celebrity on television.
