'South Park' screwed with people's Amazon Echos and Google Homes last night

South Park has had its share of spectacular and bad episodes.

After using a serialized format for the last couple of seasons, South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have hinted that they will be going back to the show's old format of standalone episodes, and will focus less on satire, and more on "Cartman dressing up like a robot and screwing with Butters". Back to the basics. The opening scene of this episode gave me hope that it was what we were going to get but sadly, it really didn't deliver. Case in point? This season kicked off with a white nationalist demonstration that directly echoed the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville, Virginia.

When one thinks of culturally relevant shows, South Park probably does not rise to the top of their list. "The series remains as urgent and relevant now as the day it premiered and at almost 20 seasons in it continues to draw generations of new fans".

The episode, titled "White People Renovating Houses", takes the events of Charlottesville and the overall trend of nationalism and complaints about an amorphous "they" taking away "our" jobs, and mashes it up with the phenomenon of artificially intelligent home assistants, showing a Confederate flag-waving, Tiki torch-wielding mob protesting the likes of Siri, Alexa, and Google Home, and shouting things like "Whatever happened to people jobs?".

Uncharacteristically, the episode ended on the up beat, more or less, with peace reigning as long as white people could keep tearing down that wall separating the kitchen and the dining room in order to get the space they deserve. The choice is made to replace all the automated personal assistants with the aggrieved nationalists, resulting in Jim Bob playing some acoustic Kendrick Lamar for Cartman, while a beer-swilling Darryl gets huffy when he's told by Randy to set a reminder for some subway tiles.

I have always loved South Park since I was a kid, but how was the Season 21 debut episode?

Season 21 of "South Park" will air on September 13 at 10 p.m. EDT on Comedy Central.

Matt and Trey said they wanted to protect this season against Trump fatigue, which was unavoidable last season when one of their essential characters, Mr. Garrison, took on the Trump role.

South Park's latest premiere marked the show's 21st season, but instead of legally drinking for the first time the cartoon just continued to deliver its occasionally brilliant, occasionally terrible, unapologetic and hyper-topical centrist humor that has let it last for so long.

South Park is often at its weakest when it takes a bunch of very loosely related issues, and tries to throw them together.

That is exactly how I feel when I wake up on the first Wednesday of South Park season.
