The Discovery of Mysterious Construction of the Great Pyramid

Now the discovery of an ancient papyrus a ceremonial boat and an ingenious system of waterworks have shed light on the infrastructure created by the builders

Although historians have known for a long time that the rock used was quarried eight miles away from the site of the pyramid in Tura, and that the granite used was from Aswan - 533 miles away, it wasn't understood how the 2600BC building supplies were transported, with experts having differing opinions.

The mystery of how builders transported stone 500 miles to build the Great Pyramid has been solved, archaeologists believe.

A new British documentary, Egypt's Great Pyramid: The New Evidence , has revealed that the Great Pyramid, Khufu, was built using an intricate system of waterways which allowed thousands of workers to transport 170,000 tonnes of limestone in wooden boats along the Nile River.

Built as a tomb for Pharaoh Khufu in about 2,600BC over 20 years, the 481ft tall structure was the largest of all the pyramids and was, until the Middle Ages, the tallest man-made construction on Earth.

The tip was discovered in the ancient scroll of papyrus, put in a ceremonial funerary boat of the Pharaoh Khufu in 2600 BC.

Written by Merer, it is the only first-hand account of the construction of the Great Pyramid, and describes in detail how limestone casing stones were shipped downstream from Tura to Giza.

Merer described how the crew transformed the landscape using giant dykes to channel water from the Nile through to the pyramid using man-made canals.

Archaeologist Mark Lehner, has uncovered evidence of a lost waterway beneath the dusty Giza plateau.

Archaeologists say they've solved one of the great mysteries which has remained unanswered for almost 5,000 years.

The new findings will be presented in a documentary on Channel 4 tonight at 8pm, called Egypt's Great Pyramid: The New Evidence.

By renovating the wooden planks from the ceremonial boat and then scanning them with a 3D laser, they archaeologists could figure out how they were first assembled, the documentary explains.

They discovered that they were sewn together with loops of rope.
