Tillerson Admits Difficulty of UN Agreement on N. Korean Oil Embargo

Johnson meets American counterpart

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson has discussed the need to increase diplomatic pressure on North Korea with UK Prime Minister Theresa May in London, where the Iran nuclear deal was also raised, APA reports quoting Press TV.

The United States has sought an embargo on oil imports to North Korea at the U.N. Security Council in response to North Korea's most powerful nuclear test to date.

US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson on Thursday (Friday in Manila) urged China to use the oil it supplies to North Korea as leverage to pressure the isolated nation into reconsidering its nuclear program.

He said China supplies North Korea with most of its oil and "Russia is the largest employer of North Korean forced labour".

"We have been clear we're going to stay very close to one another economically with our trading relationships", he said.

On North Korea, Mr Johnson said Pyongyang had "defied the world" adding that sanctions would be imposed in a way that maximised the pressure on the regime.

This morning's talks focused on the global threat from North Korea and Iran acquiring nuclear weapons.

Tillerson cited the preface of the nuclear deal, which calls on Iran to contribute positively to regional security.

The administration in July said it would utilize a broader approach to tackle Iran's "malign activities" outside of the nuclear deal, several of which the reported strategy appeared to confront.

"It is underway", Tillerson stated.

Turning to Asia, the U.S. secretary of state addressed the "unacceptable" violence against Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar, as thousands of refugees continue to stream across the border into Bangladesh. The global community adopted new measures on 11 September which put in place the most stringent UN sanctions regime placed on any nation in the 21st century. "That must stop", he said.

Commenting on violence in Myanmar against the minority Rohingya population, Tillerson said the country faced a defining moment.

Some 389,000 are estimated to have crossed since then.
