UFC Champ Jon Jones Fails 2nd Blood Sample Test

Jon Jones stripped Daniel Cormier reinstated as champion after UFC 214 result overturned

Jon Jones tested positive for the banned substance Turinabol for his fight with former champ Daniel Cormier at UFC 214.

The United States Anti Doping Agency (USADA) confirmed the positive "B" sample in a statement.

Even though Jones' (22-1 MMA, 16-1 UFC) win over Daniel Cormier (19-2 MMA, 8-2 UFC) was overturned today by the California State Athletic Commission, he is still entitled to due process in the "results management" portion of his case with both CSAC and USADA.

Jones faces up to a potentially career-ending four-year ban if the arbitrator upholds USADA's findings, so the stakes can't be higher.

"I would very much encourage everybody, despite where we're at in this with the "B" sample being confirmed, I would encourage the media, I would encourage Jon's fans, I would encourage those who aren't fans of Jon's, to let this process play out", Jeff Novitzky, the UFC's vice president of athlete health and performance, told Yahoo Sports' Kevin Iole.

Now with a second positive test coming back nearly exactly one year later, Jones faces an even stiffer penalty as a result.

The commission's decision leaves the UFC with one of its own to make.

Jones' future is now out of his hands, depending on the CASC ruling, he may be able to return to active competition, although whether UFC will take a chance on him remains to be seen.

The UFC has not officially commented on stripping Jones of the belt, but previously did so in April 2015 after a hit-and-run incident. He failed a test conducted on a sample collected one day before the bout on July 28. Jones then passed a blood test on July 29.

Turinabol metabolites are detectable only in urine tests.

Either way, Jones' record now reflects a no contest after he originally defeated Cormier by third-round knockout at their meeting at UFC 214 in July.

Widely considered the greatest fighter of all time, Jones has endured a tumultuous three-year span.

Raimondi notes it is now unclear if Cormier will simply regain the title, or if the championship will become vacant.
