Weakened Hurricane Jose could become tropical storm today

The Monday afternoon Hurricane Jose update from the National Hurricane Center

Hurricane Jose continues to lose strength and is now barely a Category 1 storm.

The storm is now 655 miles northwest of Puerto Rico moving east at 6 mph, and is expected to loop to the southeast and southwest before it heads northwest by Friday.

On Tuesday morning, Jose was driving winds of 75 mph about 435 miles south of Bermuda and more than 700 miles east of Florida.

In any case, forecasters said the shear environment will keep the hurricane relatively weak, with maximum expected winds of 80 miles per hour throughout the next few days. It is expected to remain well to the east-northeast of the Bahamas through Wednesday, the hurricane center predicted.

Over the next three days, the hurricane is supposed to turn slowly clockwise toward the west-northwest, forecasters said, as a trough to the northeast leaves and subtropical ridge builds in the northwest, north and eventually northeast.

Over the next few days, the hurricane is expected to make a rare loop and reverses its direction.

Swells generated by Jose and Irma will continue to affect the U.S. East Coast, leading to unsafe rip current conditions this week.
