'Wonder Woman' director Patty Jenkins back for sequel

It's Official: Patty Jenkins Will Return to Direct 'Wonder Woman 2'

One-picture deals are standard practice at Warner Bros. for directors tackling big-budget flicks for the first time, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Wonder Woman has eclipsed $800 million at the global box office, and Jenkins was paid $1 million for that job.

Wonder Woman exceeded all expectations for Warner Bros. But she became an indispensable figure and, along with star Gal Gadot, the face of the movie in the months before its June opening.

Since the release of Wonder Woman earlier this summer, there's been a lot of talk over whether or not Jenkins would return for the eventual sequel.

Jenkins was already working on the script for the upcoming sequel, per Variety, so it only made sense that she would eventually return to direct as well. And with Wonder Woman's pivotal role in Warner Bros.' new mantra of optimistic and "fun" superhero movies, why wouldn't Jenkins be at the helm of this new direction?

"James Cameron's inability to understand what Wonder Woman is, or stands for, to women all over the world is unsurprising as, though, he is a great filmmaker, he is not a woman", Jenkins said in a statement at the time. Just like the Wonder Woman movie broke glass ceilings for superhero movies, Jenkins' deal breaks glass for women directors.

And Jenkins was more than ready to get back in the director's chair. It seems to have paid off.

Star Gal Gadot will also reprise her role as the Amazonian warrior in the sequel, which is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2019.
