World's heaviest woman, Eman Ahmed, dies in Abu Dhabi

Eman Ahmed an Egyptian woman who underwent weight loss surgery in Mumbai. Ahmed passed away in Abu Dhabi early this morning. Reuters

Eman lost her battle against obesity at the Burjeel Hospital in Abu Dhabi today following complications from heart disease, kidney dysfunction and other comorbid conditions.

For the last four months of her life, a team of more than 20 doctors had been caring for her at the Burjeel Hospital, where it was reported staff were hoping to help her walk again.

Following the surgery, Atti's family fell out with doctors in Mumbai and requested she be transferred to the United Arab Emirates and Abu Dhabi's Burjeel hospital.

Eman Ahmed Abdul Atti after one of her earliest surgeries in March 2017 at the Saifee Hospital in Mumbai. The Egyptian national celebrated her 37th birthday a week ago. That forced her to remain in a bed for years, and her lack of movement caused her weight to skyrocket.

Ms Ahmed's sister had alleged that her treatment in Mumbai had been far short of satisfactory and that the family had been misled.

The say that she subsequently suffered cerebral stroke, which left her bedridden until April this year when surgery enabled her to lose a massive 299kg.

But her sister Shalimaa disputed the size of the weight loss in a video she broadcast on YouTube. She now weighs less than 204 kg. After having the treatment in Mumbai, she almost loses 300 kg of weight.

Ms Ahmed had a rare thyroid condition which drastically affected her metabolism, with a series of knock-on effects on her heart, kidneys and respiratory system. "If a patient's treatment is over, we can't unnecessarily keep her in hospital", said Huzaifa Sahebi, the COO of Saifee Hospital which treated her free of cost.

Family members and relatives of Eman Ahmad are yet to come to terms with the loss of their beloved.
