Amazon launches Kindle which can be read in the bath

Amazon's New Kindle Oasis Syncs Audible With Kindle And Safely Works In The Bath

The back of the new Kindle Oasis is aluminum, which gives it a premium look and feel. Instead, Amazon has managed to squeeze sufficient power into just the slender ereader itself.

Other Kindle e-readers still offered by Amazon include the $79.99 Kindle, $119 Kindle Paperwhite and $199 Kindle Voyage. You can still have a cover to protect the screen and serve as a kickstand. Users can use the touchscreen to torn pages or the dedicted page-turning buttons. It also offers an adaptive front light and more choices for font size and boldness.

You can now invert the black and white on the display, which will be particularly useful if you're reading in bed at night. It's also IP67 certified, meaning it's waterproof for up to 30 minutes in about 3 feet of fresh water (not salt water like the New Kindle Oasis). It's also been tested in different water environments, like hot tubs, pools, and bubble baths. That's because the new Oasis 2 now has a big battery inside, rather than inside a case. So you could listen to some of it on the way into work and then carry on reading where you left off at lunch. And, in case you need to add some juice before hopping on a flight, it'll fully charge in just two hours.

The Oasis also supports Audible audiobooks, synced with your reading progress; you can bounce back and forth between reading or listening. Simply tap the top portion of the screen while reading to launch the menu, look for the headphone icon in the bottom right-hand corner and, assuming you've previously paired the Oasis with your speakers, headphones or auto audio system, playback will begin at the top of the page you're now reading. And, with an IPX8 waterproof rating, you can actually submerge this Oasis in an oasis, should you find one.

Arguably most impressive is the price. For what it's worth, Amazon told me that even at the higher price, original Oasis units were selling very well.

Audible will be made available via an over-the-air update to the eighth-generation Kindle and the original Kindle Oasis in the next few months.

That gets you WiFi connectivity and 8GB of storage. Support for audio books also justifies the 8GB of storage standard (twice as much as before), notes Gizmodo.

As for the covers, the fabric versions are $44.99 apiece, while the leather are $59.99.

The new Oasis is able to pre-order now, and will go on full sale on 31st October priced at £229.99.
