Australia end Syria's World Cup dream

Firas Al Khatib believes that Syria's Road to Russian Federation came to an end because they were unable to beat Australia in the first leg of the Asian Play-offs after a 2-1 defeat in Tuesday's second leg saw the Socceroos advance to the FIFA World Cup Inter-Continental Play-off following a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.

The last nervous moment for the Socceroos came in the 120th minute when Al Soma cracked a brilliant free kick effort off the post, but Australia eventually emerged 2-1 victors on the night and 3-2 on aggregate across the two legs.

Al Soma handed the Syrians the lead after just six minutes before Tim Cahill equalised in the 13th minute.

The Socceroos continued to struggle even after Mahmoud Al Mawas was sent off for a second bookable offence following a rash challenge on Robbie Kruse.

Tim Cahill scored twice, including an extra-time victor, as Australia kept their World Cup hopes alive with a nervy 2-1 victory over Syria on Tuesday.

"It doesn't matter who we play next".

Australia boss Ange Postecoglou described Tim Cahill as "a unique and extraordinary individual" after his two goals sealed their place in an intercontinental World Cup play-off.

Those combinations helped put James Troisi into the box to feed Cahill, but his right-footed finish was blocked by a defender's thigh with the goal beckoning. Robbie Kruse found space on the left-edge of the box and crossed for Cahill to head in his 50th global goal for Australia.

Is the Australia vs Syria game online?

"We will beat you in Sydney and then we will have sometime to eat kangaroo barbecue before we go back SYRIA", one commentator wrote, while another added: "Are you walking in Australia or jumping like kangaroos?"

The move was a huge gamble given the Huddersfield Town man was the standout in last week's opening-leg 1-1 draw. The players have had to fight all the way through qualifying and they believe in themselves.

However, the United States could yet finish fourth should they lose and one of Panama and Honduras win against Costa Rica and Mexico, respectively.

Tamer Haj Mohamad dispossessed Mark Milligan in midfield and he fed Al Somah, who outpaced the Australian defence and planted the ball high into the net with his left foot.

The Terriers midfielder started on the bench but was introduced after just 10 minutes after Bournemouth utility man Brad Smith picked up a suspected hip injury.
