Chicago Man Arrested For Vandalizing Christopher Columbus Statue

Editorial: Statues Of Limitations

Nationally, A movement to abolish Columbus Day and replace it with Indigenous Peoples Day is gaining momentum. On Monday, some will honor their Italian-American culture, but others are asking for Christopher Columbus statues to be taken down.

But the conversation around who Christopher Columbus was and what he represents in this country has intensified, spurring many communities around the country to rename the day Indigenous Peoples Day, recognizing the people who were most negatively affected by Columbus.

As previously mentioned, Columbus Day is controversial. Columbus Day has been replaced with other holidays in some areas, including Alaska, Hawaii, Oregon and South Dakota, which commemorate Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day.

A new survey shows that nearly six in 10 Americans, or 57 percent, believe that celebrating Columbus Day is a "good idea", while only 29 percent oppose the holiday. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, said at a press conference in support of the Columbus Circle statue on Sunday, the Daily News reported.

They're told that Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas, leading to colonies on this side of the pond.

"Columbus symbolizes the genocide of nearly an entire race of people and I think its time people stand up against him", said Owen McGaff, a Plains Indian to ABC News. "It's unfortunate because I did go up there and I did see it all smashed".

The city also has long-term plans to install four bronze statues of Loggerhead turtles in a fountain in Civic Center Park, symbolic of the Ohlone tribe that once called Berkeley "Turtle Island".

The notion of an Indigenous Peoples Day took root at an global conference on discrimination sponsored by the United Nations in 1977.

Trump's proclamation stands in stark contrast to Obama-era statements that used the day as an opportunity to open dialogue about both the positive and negative externalities of Columbus' discovery. While Leftists recently have targeted Columbus for ridicule and rejection, historians agree on his monumental impact. Thousands were sent to Spain to be sold.

New York City, for instance, will today host its 73rd annual Columbus Day parade on Fifth Ave., with 35,000 people marching and over 100 bands, floats and groups.

The news conference, organized by the Kluge-Ruhe Aboriginal Art Collection, took place in front of colorful chalk drawings celebrating Virginia's natural landscape and indigenous people.

According to ABC 7, two were dressed in fake chains. One wore a hooded white sheet.

One of the state's founding fathers, John Jay, served as president of the Continental Congress, chief justice of the Supreme Court, and governor of NY state.
