County officials vote to repeal Chicago-area soda tax

Chicago and many suburban areas - board committee voted 15-2 to repeal the tax, which charged individuals a penny per ounce of pop.

After delays related to a lawsuit from the Illinois Retail Merchants Association, the tax on sugary beverages went into effect this past August.

Store owners, drink companies and bottlers all battled the tax.

Supporters of the movement which involve many top public health groups former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg have promoted the taxes as a symbol to combat obesity while also erecting earnings for confined administration.

The vote sets the stage for a final vote on Wednesday to repeal the tax, which aroused the ire of consumers and retailers who say their businesses have been adversely affected.

Gainer said she is committed to working with Preckwinkle and her colleagues "to approach the 2018 budget line-by-line and find alternate ways to close the budget gap". "Beverage taxes are really a money grab that has nothing to do with public health".

Healthy Food America's executive director Dr. Jim Krieger said that Cook County's success in repealing the sweetened beverage tax was unique to state's tax legislation; and that it would not stop the momentum of other taxes that have taken effect across the USA, including Philadelphia and Seattle earlier this year.

Preckwinkle warned commissioners Thursday, Oct. 5, that they would be forced to make steep cuts across the county to make up for the lost revenue officials counted on from the tax to balance next year's $5.4 billion budget. They have until November 30 to approve a budget.
