Dem Rep. Al Green introduces articles of impeachment against Trump, forcing vote

Tom Steyer and Donald Trump

House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., and other leaders have sought to tamp down calls for Trump's impeachment, citing ongoing investigations into his campaign and administration being pursued by congressional committees and special counsel Robert Mueller.

Green told The Washington Post in an interview last month that he was compelled to pursue articles of impeachment after seeing Trump denigrate pro football players who have engaged in silent protests during the playing of the national anthem before games.

And Bill Clinton survived a Senate vote after the House impeached him in 1998 for lying to a federal grand jury about his extramarital affair with a White House intern.

Congress can only remove the president with a vote by two-thirds of the Senate. "[He] has betrayed his trust as president to the manifest injury of the American people and is unfit to be president and is impeached pursuant to Article Two, Section Four, of the Constitution of the United States of America".

Speaking on the floor of the House Wednesday morning, Green said Trump's rhetoric and actions have fueled "an alt-right hate machine" and harmed American society.

It's likely that lawmakers in the GOP-controlled House will vote to set aside his resolution.

"In so doing", Green continued, Trump "has fueled and is fueling an alt-right hate machine and his worldwide covert sympathizers, engendering racial antipathy, LGTBQ enmity, religious anxiety, stealthy sexism and terrible xenophobia, perfidiously causing immediate injury to American society".

If he had followed through, Green would have forced every Democrat in the House to put themselves on the record one way or another on impeachment.

While Green's actions won't lead to an immediate impeachment of the President, it is yet another step in that direction. The odds were good Republican leadership would move to table the articles but Green planned to challenge the ruling and force a procedural vote, according to the Hill.

Green's resolution is considered "privileged" by the House, meaning it has to be considered by the end of the week. Thus the resolution was not offered and will not be subject to a definite vote on the House floor.

"I want my colleagues do what their consciences dictates, as will I, and we'll let history judge us all", Green said. "Mr. Speaker, I announce that impeachment is postponed".

This second round of impeachment articles against the president may have sounded impressive, but once again it has already turned out to be a lot of sound and fury, signifying nothing much of real importance.
