Eight Panthers standouts who paved way to 27-24 win over Lions

Panthers vs Lions: Game Pick – A battle of the 3-1's

Another big game from quarterback Cam Newton and a surprise showing from tight end Ed Dickson were just enough for the Panthers to hold off a Lions' rally and escape Detroit with a 27-24 win Sunday. The third quarter was all Panthers as the penalties slowed down and they built a 27-10 lead. "It's amusing to hear a female talk about routes like.it's amusing", Newton said in response to a question from Charlotte Observer reporter Jourdan Rodrigue - a comment that Newton called "extremely degrading and disrespectful" in his apology. The past two games, Newton has seven total touchdowns with only one interception. With a perfectly lofted 31-yard pass to Benjamin, the 2015 NFL MVP put Carolina up 24-10 early in the third.

Cam Newton was almost ideal Sunday and Ed Dickson had the game of his career against the Lions.

Detroit (3-2) struggled to move the ball in the air and on the ground until late in the game. Matthew Stafford found tight end Darren Fells for TD strikes on back-to-back drives to pull the Lions to within a field goal with 3:22 remaining. Panthers coach Ron Rivera and the players say they're focusing on the Lions, but a national controversy and the resulting questions can distract a team.

Three touchdowns were scattered amongst Devin Funchess, Kelvin Benjamin, and Panthers rookie Christian McCaffrey.

Rodrigue asked Cam Newton about wide receiver Devin Funchess' route running on Wednesday and Carolina's quarterback laughed and said, "It's amusing to hear a female talk about routes".

Lions: Defensive tackle Haloti Ngata had an elbow injury. However, Cornerback Daryl Worley and wide receiver Curtis Samuel both of whom missed last week's game with injuries are expected to be back in the field. Detroit will live and die by the play of Matt Stafford and as the league's highest paid player it makes sense as such as he is an extraordinary talent and has led the Lions to a handful of heart stopping, cone from behind victories over the years.
