Facebook testing an info button for links to combat fake news

Facebook tries fighting fake news with publisher info button on links

"Today we are starting a new test to give people additional context on the articles they see in News Feed", the company announced in a blog post.

5, Facebook users will begin seeing a new information button on shared articles.

"People have told us that they want more information about what they're reading, Sara Su, a product manager for Facebook told TechCrunch, a widely respected site that covers Silicon Valley and the tech industry".

"The additional contextual information is pulled from across Facebook and other sources, such as information from the publisher's Wikipedia entry". If there is no information provided, like if a publisher doesn't have a Wikipedia page, Facebook will display that there is no additional data. The information panel is an effort to help Facebook users determine the credibility of the publisher by providing more information about its history.

Senator Mark Warner, a member of the intelligence committee, said that "it's important that the three companies that we've invited - Google, Twitter, and Facebook - will appear in a public hearing" to testify on how they will curb misinformation and manipulation. "Vandalism on Wikipedia is a rare and unfortunate event that is usually resolved quickly", she told TechCrunch.

Facebook has been under fire since the 2016 presidential election for the proliferation of fake or slanted news popping up in its feeds and being disseminated to users.

And to avoid distributing fake news, Facebook says Related Articles will "be about the same topic - and will be from a wide variety of publishers that regularly publish news content on Facebook that get high engagement with our community".
