GM to start testing driverless cars in NYC

As if Manhattan's streets aren't insane enough, General Motors is placing self-driving cars - Chevy Bolts - on its roads starting next year. Many self-driving cars, manned by a human safety driver, are now being tested on public roads, and they are expected to enter regular service as robo-taxis or private cars starting in 2020.

Cruise's upcoming trials will represent first time Level 4 autonomous vehicles are tested in the state, Cuomo said.

The company will send automated Chevrolet Bolt electric cars to hazard a 5-square-mile area of lower Manhattan because the area's congested and convoluted byways provide the best proving ground for the robot-driven rides, according to Kyle Vogt, chief executive of GM's self-driving division Cruise Automation. General Motors and its self-driving unit, Cruise Automation, are already creating maps for the "geofenced" area of Manhattan where they will conduct their research. The area is now being mapped via geo-fencing tools - and GM will be hiring people in the New York City area, says New York's Office of the Governor.

Cuomo today announced that ny is now accepting applications from companies interested in testing or demonstrating autonomous vehicles on public roads.

Flights across the United Kingdom were cancelled and delayed, with some flights aborted due to "smoke smells" in the cockpits. Shannon Airport say their staff worked throughout the night to help airlines clear a backlog of flights delayed by Ophelia.

The Department of Motor Vehicles and State Police will work with Cruise and GM to ensure all testing meets relevant safety, vehicle and insurance requirements, Cuomo's office confirmed.

"Autonomous vehicles have the potential to save time and save lives, and we are proud to be working with GM and Cruise on the future of this exciting new technology", said Cuomo.

As part of the deal, Strobe's engineering team is joining GM's Cruise Automation team "to define and develop next-generation lidar solutions for self-driving vehicles". Level 5 is the ultimate in autonomous technology, where not even a steering wheel or pedals are needed. The move is the second of the month made by GM to advance the development of autonomous vehicles. Many vehicle and tech companies have cited 2020 as a date for deploying the technologies. The parties did not reveal the financials of the agreement.
