Goffin through to Japan Open tennis final

TOKYO (AP) - David Goffin reached a second straight Japan Open final and will meet Adrian Mannarino, who beat top-seeded Marin Cilic on Saturday.

In a fiercely-contested match, Cilic's powerful groundstrokes gave him a 5-3 lead in the first set but Mannarino fought back to force a tiebreak, which the Frenchman led 4-2 before losing five of the next six points.

Mannarino, 29, will face fourth seed David Goffin after the in-form Belgian eked out a 7-6 (3) 7-6 (6) victory over Argentina's Diego Schwartzman in the first semi-final.

Goffin finished runner-up in Tokyo a year ago and earned a first trophy in three years last Sunday in Shenzhen.

The weather first moved in with Gasquet leading Goffin 3-2 in the opening set as the roof swung into action.

In addition to adding to his accolades, Goffin's successes in the Far East have brought him closer to booking a place at next month's ATP World Tour finals.

"I don't know if he served worse or I returned better but it changed a lot from the middle of the second set - then I was risky in every service game of Marin's", Mannarino said. With the injured Novak Djokovic and Stan Wawrinka ruled out, 10th place is good enough to secure a place at the end-of-season showpiece.

Cilic had 11 aces and dropped only one point on his first serve.

"In the beginning it was really nice for me", Schwartzman said. I have a lot of happy memories in Tokyo. "To play like this is a big boost for my confidence, something I was focusing on". "Then he started to serve better, got his first serve in, and became more aggressive, coming to the net a few times more".

Canadian Milos Raonic's injury woes continued on Thursday as he was forced to retire from his second-round match against local favourite Yuichi Sugita at the Japan Open.
