Here's What The Trump Administration Wants In Exchange For Protecting DREAMers

President Donald Trump speaks to reporters before leaving the White House in Washington for a brief stop at Andrews Air Force Base in Md. on his way to Greensboro N.C. The Trump administration sent an immigration policy wish

President Donald Trump has unveiled a long list of immigration priorities he says must be included as part of any legislative package extending protections for young immigrants brought to the USA illegally as children.

The White House wants the construction of a border wall, changes to federal law to make it much harder for people to seek asylum in the United States, to make the E-Verify employment verification system mandatory, and to prevent USA citizens and permanent residents from bringing over family members other than spouses and minor children as immigrants to the US.

Concretely, Trump is seeking funding from Congress to build his long-promised wall along the US border with Mexico, curbs to legal immigration, and a crackdown on minors who come to the United States illegally.

Last Sunday, Trump shared his legislative proposal to Congress meant to address the issue of illegal immigration in the country.

And in exchange for allowing DACA recipients to get some sub-citizenship legal status, the White House wants a comprehensive immigration crackdown. But what's new is demanding that they be included in the legislative fix for the DACA program. Under these principles, there will be restrictions for family-based green cards to spouses and minor children and there will also be a creation for a point-based system for legal immigration.

Trump had previously said he wanted a DACA deal to include significant money for border security and eventual funding for his border wall. Apple and Microsoft even led a number of tech giants in promising legal aid to workers facing the risk of deportation.

The Trump administration released a list of hard-line immigration principles October 8, which could threaten to derail a deal in Congress to protect "dreamers" from deportation.

"It's an extension of the white supremacist agenda - what they want to do is criminalize and delegitimize Latinos", Gutierrez said in an interview Sunday following Trump's announcement.

Top congressional Democrats say the list is unreasonable and fails to represent any attempt at compromise. The program shields people brought to the USA illegally as children from deportation.

Trump wants the border wall he campaigned on to be built, a crackdown on illegal immigration and to switch the US legal immigration system from one that prioritizes family connections to one based on merit.

Trump told Congress it had six months to come up with legislation to help Dreamers, who are a fraction of the 11 million illegal immigrants in the United States, most of whom are Hispanic. However, Mexican president Enrique Peña Nieto has made clear on numerous occasions he did not agree with the wall and Mexico would offer no funds towards its construction.

'The list includes the wall, which was explicitly ruled out of the negotiations.

Coupled with taking executive action against illegal immigrants, the Department of Homeland Security has also conducted nationwide raids in recent weeks and arrested about 500 illegal immigrants that it says have violated the law.

"If the President was serious about protecting the Dreamers, his staff has not made a good faith effort to do so", they said.

But Democratic leaders nearly immediately denounced the demands.
